The Kogelberg Biosphere lies at the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Kogelberg - Heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom

A short trip south of Cape Town in South Africa brings you to a natural sanctuary so valuable that UNESCO has declared it a biosphere. The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve spans around 100,000 hectares—an area larger than Singapore—and is dedicated to protecting this vast natural wonder.

With approximately 1,600 plant species, the Kogelberg Biosphere boasts a floral diversity per unit area greater than anywhere else in the world. It begins in the mountains above Gordon’s Bay and includes land, sea, and coastal towns up to Bot River, extending inland to Grabouw.

Why is the Kogelberg Biosphere so valuable?

The Kogelberg Biosphere is the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six floral kingdoms globally. It has the richest, most complex biodiversity on Earth, home to over 1,880 plant species, 77 of which are endemic to this region. The seascapes are equally significant, with more than 3,500 marine species found here.

Birdlife in the biosphere is spectacular, featuring fynbos endemic species like the Cape Rockjumper and Cape Sugarbird. Along the coast, conservation efforts have led to a steady rise in the population of the Black Oystercatcher. Mammals such as the delicate Cape Grysbok and Klipspringer roam freely in the fynbos landscapes, which also house the elusive Cape Leopard. The coastal waters are a gathering place for Southern Right whales in spring.

The biosphere is also home to smaller, often overlooked inhabitants, including the Critically Endangered Micro Frog and various tiny pollinators essential to the fynbos ecosystem, as well as shy reptiles.

Globally, unsustainable use of natural resources has led to biodiversity loss, cultural heritage erosion, risks to water and food security, increased poverty, and climate change. The Kogelberg Biosphere addresses these issues by reconciling conservation with sustainable development to benefit all. Through collective action, members work towards sustainable and just economies while allowing nature to provide its services sustainably.

Community involvement

The Kogelberg Biosphere focuses on nature education, especially for the youth, through environmental education programs. These programs encourage the protection of nature by highlighting biological health benefits, ecologically sustainable practices, and job creation opportunities through eco-tourism. The Kogelberg Biosphere Youth Network, established in July 2023, partners with local schools and community groups to provide environmental education classes and outings, benefiting all communities within the biosphere boundaries.

Invasive alien plants threaten both the fynbos landscapes and water security. Removing these thirsty alien plants from Kogelberg waterscapes is crucial, and numerous alien clearing projects are underway. The Kogelberg Biosphere coordinates these efforts with funding from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, WWF South Africa, Cape Nature, and the Greater Cape Town Water Fund.

The Kogelberg Biosphere also works with town and farming communities to maintain conservancies, such as those in Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay, ensuring the protection and sustainable use of these precious natural resources in line with the principles supported by Go Sustainable Tourism.
